Scientific studies are increasingly coming to the conclusion that water contamination may be America’s number one health problem. Over 70% of the human body is water, and it needs clean properly mineralized water daily to rejuvenate its immune system and flush out toxins. Water is the foundation of human health; if the foundation is weak the entire structure is jeopardized.

Most people have lost touch with their body’s demands for water and have instead substituted food and/or other beverages for water. Ironically, many of the beverages most people choose, such as alcohol, juices, soft drinks, coffee, and tea actually dehydrate the body and make the body more acidic – thus adding to the problem.

Many of today’s health problems are the result of chronic acidosis, dehydration and/or a vain attempt to rehydrate with contaminated acidic water or purified acidic water. Unfortunately, research on drinking water is highly fragmented and often opinionated. Studies on water and heart disease often ignore the findings of studies on drinking water and cancer and vice versa, thus creating an often inconsistent and confusing picture.

The Problem 

Prior to burning fossil fuels, drinking water in nature was acid free, and primarily contained four bicarbonate electrolyte salts: calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium bicarbonates.

These alkaline bicarbonate electrolyte salts facilitate voltage gated ion channels in the body and they buffer the acids generated by the body as it expends energy in its quest to survive. Prior to the industrial revolution humans were alkaline by design and acid generating by function.

The water we now drink is full of sulfuric and nitric acids (acid rain) from the combustion of fossil fuels. The sulfuric and the nitric acids relentlessly erode the earth (they release inorganic silica, alumina, iron, calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium [the seven most prevalent minerals in the earth’s crust]) and create hard water. We end up with acidic, hard water.

Toxic metals, such as iron, mercury, and aluminum, can be released into the environment through the acidification of soils. The toxic metals can then end up in drinking water, crops, and fish, which are then consumed by humans for food. If ingested in great quantities, these metals can have toxic effects on human health.

“Water hardness (inorganic minerals in solution) is the underlying cause of many, if not all, of the diseases resulting from poisons in the intestinal tract. These (hard minerals) pass from the intestinal walls and get into the lymphatic system, which delivers all of its products to the blood, which in turn, distributes to all parts of the body. This is the cause of much human disease.” Dr. Charles Mayo of the Mayo Clinic

Inorganic minerals (not the four naturally occurring bicarbonate salts, which the body recognizes) cause leukocytosis, an elevated white blood cell count. Leukocytosis is but one of the reactions of the body’s defensive mechanisms against toxic materials. Hard acidic water (containing inorganic minerals, sulfuric and nitric acids) is toxic and it will cause toxic reactions in the body.

The studies though, have been confusing to say the least. Greathouse and Osborne studied 4200 adults, aged 25 to 74, in 35 different geographic areas of the US. Their findings: there was less heart disease mortality in hard water areas than in soft water areas. Note: they never mentioned the sulfuric and nitric acids that created the hard water in the first place, as if the acids were not a factor!

Today many people still believe that drinking hard water results in less cardiovascular disease than drinking soft water. Yet, over the years, there have been an increasing number of published reports linking specific elements in drinking water to diseases. Many researchers have concluded that elevated selenium, aluminum, iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium levels in hard water are detrimental to human health.

Acid rain looks, feels, and tastes just like clean rain. According to the EPA, “the harm to people from acid rain is not direct.” The EPA says that walking in acid rain, or even swimming in an acid lake, is no more dangerous than walking or swimming in clean water. (3) (The EPA says the water is polluted, however, they imply that polluted water does not affect our health?) The EPA, never mentioned the impacts of drinking hard acidic water! Acid rain has changed the pH of the ocean, rivers, and lakes — acid rain has changed the pH of the human race. Prior to acid rain, humans were alkaline by design and acid generating by function! The human race is now acidic through pollution and acid generating by function. The more we energy we expend, the more acidic we become.

Scientists have now accumulated a body of evidence that proves that acid deposition greatly effects agriculture, crops, plants, and trees, and just about everything else for that matter.  The vegetables we eat are grown in acidic, chlorinated, fluoridated, contaminated, hard water, in dead demineralized soil, and then they are sprayed with toxic pesticides (a plethora of neurotoxins, nerves gasses, sedatives and endocrine disrupters). Furthermore, the fertilizers used to grow our vegetables and fruit are highly acidic and kill the microbes in soil (knocks out the nitrogen cycle). Between the acidic, hard, contaminated water, acidic fertilizers, and intensive farming and irresponsible agricultural practices; we have stripped the soil from most all the natural minerals and essential microbes needed to grow the type of healthy foods needed to keep the human body healthy and in balance.

In 1964, only 1 person in 214 was diagnosed with cancer. Today it is 1 in 3 females and 1 in 2 males.  The incidence of disease and poor health is directly related to low pH levels (acidic pH) in the body. “It is not uncommon for the average American to have a urinary pH between 4.5 and 5.5. Oxygen levels in the body are directly related to its pH. Increasing pH from 4 to 5 increases oxygen to the cells by a factor of 10, from 4 to 6 by a factor of 100, and from 4 to 7 by a factor of 1,000. Cancer cells have an extremely acidpH and are oxygen depleted, while healthy cells have a slightly alkaline pH with high oxygen content. Research shows that unless the body’s pH level is slightly alkaline, the body cannot heal itself. So, no matter what type of modality you use to improve your health problem, the modality won’t be effective until the pH level comes up.” Hypoxia is a pathological condition in which the body as a whole (generalized hypoxia) or a region of the body (tissue hypoxia) is deprived of adequate oxygen supply. Cerebral hypoxia occurs when there is not enough oxygen getting to the brain. The brain needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients to function. Symptoms of mild cerebral hypoxia include: change in attention (inattentiveness) and poor judgment.

Contaminated demineralized food, contaminated water, acidic pH, and hypoxia impedes the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Current Options 

With all of humankind’s great progress and scientific advancements, we have not been able to take care of the most essential of human needs: properly mineralized drinking water.

All the leading commercially available water purifiers are largely ineffective and obsolete at best, with some methods creating water that is actually harmful to human health.

The evolution of water treatment: Carbon Filters, Distillation, Reverse Osmosis, and last but not least, Water Ionizers.

Carbon Filters: reduce only organic compounds. An organic compound is any member of a large class of gaseous, liquid, or solid chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon. Inorganic compounds, minerals, and chemical elements are not removed.

Carbon filtered water contains high total dissolved solids (inorganic minerals). A carbon filter does not remove sulfuric or nitric acids. The water has high acid content and contains many contaminants including iron, fluoride, lead, cadmium, zinc, aluminum, trace pharmaceuticals, disinfection by-products, etc.

Distillation: removes everything from the water except chlorine and acids. Note: chlorine and acids are liquids and gasses that evaporate and thus still remain in the water after the distillation process. “When chlorine is added to our water, it combines with other natural compounds to form Trihalomethanes (chlorination byproducts), or THMs. These THMs trigger the production of free radicals in the body, causing cell damage, and are highly carcinogenic. According to the Environmental Defense Fund, ‘Although concentrations of these carcinogens (THMs) are low, it is precisely these low levels that cancer scientists believe are responsible for the majority of human cancers in the United States.’” (8) Simply stated, chlorine is a pesticide, as defined by the U.S. EPA, whose sole purpose is to kill living organisms. The US Council of Environmental Quality states that, “the cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine” (Showering in Tap Water, 2001). Organizations such as Greenpeace and the Sierra Club, as well as many doctors and scientists, are publicly claiming that certain levels of chlorine can lead to cancer, decreased immune system, birth defects and other health problems to those who are exposed. J.M. Price, M.D. of Saginaw Hospital believes that, “chlorine is the greatest crippler and killer of modern times.

Today, eighty-five percent of pharmaceuticals contain chlorine or are made using chlorine chemistry. Commonly prescribed life-saving antibiotics, cancer treatment drugs, AIDS medications, heart and high blood pressure medications, arthritis medications, cold and allergy medicines, and pain relievers like Tylenol are all made with the assistance of chlorine.

Distilled water is aggressive water, it is highly acidic, it has a low pH, it is dead water, and it is neurotoxin. It does not contain any bicarbonate electrolyte salts.

Reverse Osmosis:  in conjunction with a carbon filter removes 90 to 98% of total solid contaminates from water resulting in water that is basically equivalent to distilled water, without the chlorine. Reverse Osmosis it does not remove acids from water (acids are liquids and gasses, not solids). Reverse Osmosis water too is aggressive water; it is highly acidic, it has a low pH, it is dead water, and it is a neurotoxin. It does not contain bicarbonate electrolyte salts.

Water Ionizers: remove acids (acid rain, sulfuric and nitric acids) from tap water, and they incorporate a carbon block filter, which will reduce organic compounds from the water. Ionized water is basically acid-free carbon block filtered tap water. Ionized water has a high level of TDS (total dissolved solids) and contains many inorganic contaminants (whatever happens to be in the tap water). Ionized water has a high pH because the water is high in TDS (unnatural levels of inorganic minerals in the water) and because the acids were removed. Ionized water is still hard contaminated water.

Tap Water: is high in TDS, high in acid and organic compounds, and contains many contaminants including fluoride, trace pharmaceuticals, pesticides, chlorine, disinfection by-products, etc.

Bottled Water: quality is unregulated and the water is highly acidic. Spring water is hard (high TDS), and it contains acids, heavy metals, chemicals, pesticides, etc. Purified water is the same as distilled and reverse osmosis waters; it is aggressive water, it is highly acidic, it has low pH, it is dead water, and it is a neurotoxin. Furthermore, most bottled water is packaged in plastic bottles, which leech biphenyl- A (an endocrine disruptor) into the water. Today’s leading water purifiers create acid water or dead water that is harmful at some level and impedes on the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
